Artists Statement
My practice is a social critique. Be it skewering television media or invoking a counterfeit nostalgia, through re-imaginings of commemorative plates, collectables, ornaments and tapestries typical of post-war Britain.
I take the post war aesthetic of memorabilia and combine this with arguably undesirable celebrity culture and issues of modern society, aiming to highlight our changing value systems.
Until recently, military figures and beautiful scenery were the preferred subjects of decoration. Today’s society seems to have rejected such ornamentation, believing ourselves to be above such crass idolatry. However, ratings for trash TV climb, sales of Heat and the popularity of poor role models grow. My work aims to address this hypocrisy with visual punch lines.
